Why We Built Bo – The Ultimate Upgrade to the Segway GMax
Oscar Morgan - Bo CEO - June 2025
Before founding Bo we were already riding scooters as the best way to cross town.
My personal journey was to upgrade from a Xiaomi 365, then to an Unagi, and finally to a Segway GMax . All of us agreed that we loved the freedom scooting gave us - but we hated the actual ride.
Even on the Segway it was too floppy, too fragile. We read about the mass recalls, the hinges snapping, and it felt like a matter of time until we had a crash.
Truthfully we didn’t want to ride it - but we needed to.
Power Matters, Fun Matters, Quality Matters.
We also wanted more power - I don't mean insane racetrack power, but still plenty of it. Enough power to have stacks of fun, conquer any hill, and feel elite while boosting along city streets.
Even if only one hill on the way home so steep that we had to push, that sucked. The Segway GMax was fine for most of what we rode, but too often we found ourselves slowing down or wobbling uphill, feeling like we were pushing a toy past its limits.
From Segway to Bo: The Natural Upgrade
That’s why we created Bo - the ultimate Segway upgrade.
Not a slight improvement, a full rethink of the 'road-focused' scooter. If we wanted to go racing then companies like Dualtron and Nami were creating sports scooters, but that's not what we were after.
Bo was built as a proper ‘road’ vehicle: the most solid ride, the juiciest power, and all of it wrapped in a super stylish package. It wasn’t just about making something better than the Segway - it was about building something that made it obvious why you’d never go back.
Bo was conceived from day one as the no-brainer step up from a Segway GMax - and from every other commuter e-scooter we tried or worked on: Pure Electric, Navee, Apollo, you name it.
We Could Have Stopped... We Didn’t.
By some measure the work was done once the power and ride felt right, but we couldn't stop. At that point, it wasn’t just about fixing our frustrations with the Segway, it was now about creating the best electric scooter you could possibly ride. The company had a mission: Enjoy Every Journey.
That meant solving everything that annoyed us on the GMax:
- Lack of proper power? Fixed.
- Nowhere to lock it securely? Designed in.
- Nowhere to carry bags? Sorted.
- Pogo-stick suspension? Reimagined from the ground up.
If anything on Bo compromised the ride experience, a solution had to be found.
Over the past 5 years Bo has been a relentless pursuit of the best e-scooter for real riders, in real cities, with real hills, real weather, and real lives.
