How Much Range Do You Actually Need?
Luke Robus - Bo Design Director - September 2025
This is about picking the right E-Scooter for the way you actually ride
When we built Bo, we didn’t ask “how far could it go?”
We asked: How far do real people actually ride and how can we make every metre feel relaxed?
In this context, feeling relaxed means you actually trust that it will do the range that it claims: confidence in your fuel tank.
Battery range is one of the big, noisy specification items in the electric scooter world. Big numbers making big promises. Unfortunately there's also a stack of lies in all of this, and 'on-paper' range alone doesn’t make a good ride: what matters is actual, usable real world range.
Real-world means the kind that matches your daily journeys, fits your lifestyle, and doesn’t punish you with anxiety as soon as you reach 25% state of charge.
So, if you’re trying to figure out the best scooter for your riding habits - whether it's short hops across town or longer commutes - let's discuss what's actually needed...
First: Be Accurate About Your Riding
Are you riding to the station and back 5 minutes, or doing a regular 15-mile cross-town loop?
Do you use your scooter every day, or just when the sun’s out?
Is access to charging awkward, which means you need a battery that lasts all week, or just enough to last all morning?
To take a moment and actually sell the Bo benefits; while you're asking these questions it doesn't just have to be about battery range. It's also about the fundamental characteristics of the vehicle. Here’s what we’ve learned riding thousands of miles across the UK, US, EU and beyond:
-
Short regular errand hops need locking, practical cargo, and quick charging
-
Medium 'commute' rides demand stability, weather protection, and proper power
-
Longer journeys require all of the above, but mainly demand serious battery range you can trust. That also means a genuine 'eco' drive mode to maximise that range.
Bo Range Philosophy: Built for Real-Life Rides
Rather than pumping headline numbers, we designed Bo to deliver premium performance across the journeys most riders actually do:
-
Up to 41.8 miles of real-world range (to reach this you'll need eco mode, maximum tyre inflation, and absolutely minimal stop-starting or hills).
-
Powered by our BoPower motor with intelligent energy management
-
Recharge in under 4 hours with 3.0 Amp fast charging as standard
-
Confidence through hundreds of charge cycles thanks to class-leading battery longevity and warranty.
A few notes on rider types and which Bo is the best fit:
The City Cruiser - Short Rides, Normally Errands
Your ride is short but essential. Maybe it's the 1.5 miles from home to the grocery, or a loop from your flat to the coffee shop to the gym and back.
You want a scooter that’s ultra practical (easy to lock!), charges fast, and is super convenient.
You still expect performance (short journeys still have hills) and you want every ride to feel smooth, safe, and solid.
The M1 is perfect for short-range riders who still want a premium experience.
-
Full power available
-
IP66-rated: keep riding in genuinely torrential rain
-
Confidence-inspiring geometry and balance
-
Fast 3.0Amp top-up charging = no planning required
The Daily Commuter - Medium Rides, Maximum Dependability
You're doing 4+ miles each way. You're dodging traffic, climbing hills, carrying a backpack on the Lock n Load, and sometimes picking up groceries on the way home.
You don’t just need range, you need peace of mind that you've got plenty of distance in-hand when a surprise detour comes up.
It's borderline, but while you can get away with M1 it's worth considering the upgrade to M2.
Key specs:
-
Real-world range: up to 41.8 miles (or in normal, hectic riding ~30 miles).
-
Regenerative-braking energy recovery, maximises range
-
Stable ride even with cargo on board
-
Water resistant, city tested, hill-conquering high torque powertrain
The Long-Haul Rider — When You Go All In
You’re doing 10+ mile rides on the regular. You're cruising back roads, taking the scenic route, or using your scooter to avoid ever using the bus. This isn’t “last-mile transport” this is the ride.
You need reliable range that doesn’t leave you stranded, and still lets you open the throttle without second-guessing.
Bo gives you long-haul battery performance wrapped in a chassis that handles like a dream.
At this point it's time to choose M2:
-
Real-world range: up to 41.8 miles (or in normal eco riding ~30 miles)
-
BoPower motor controller manages torque + efficiency on the fly
-
Ergonomic design = less fatigue on longer rides
-
Fast charging so you’re never waiting around
A Quick Note on Regulation (UK riders)
As of now, riding electric scooters on public roads, pavements, or cycle paths in the UK remains illegal unless part of a sanctioned trial. Private land only, with permission.
We're actively engaged in pushing for sensible, safe legalisation but until that changes, always ride responsibly.
Your Requirements - for Real Range, Ride Bo.
Whether your journey is 1 mile or 20, the design intent for everything we do at Bo is to give you the power, control, and confidence to enjoy every second of it.
